These illustrations show some of the ancestors of the modern horse. The earliest ancestor, <I>Eohippus,</I> lived about 55 million years ago. Various horselike creatures gradually developed over millions of years, changing in size and other body features. For example, the many-toed feet of early horses developed into the single-toed hoofs of today's horses.
